  • 5 medium/large apples (preferably Granny Smith & Macoun)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/41/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Homemade pie crust or biscuit dough

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling by peeling, coring, and chopping the apples. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add apples along with brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook until tender (about 5–7 minutes).
  2. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick and cut into circles.
  3. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle. Fold over and seal edges using a fork.
  4. Fry in hot oil until golden brown (about 3 minutes per side) and drain on paper towels.
